DAYS OF OUR LIVES: Sophia Allison, Paul W. Evans, Kim Tucker

WEEKEND is pleased to present Days of Our Lives, a collaborative installation of individual works by Sophia Allison, Paul W. Evans and Kim Tucker.

Memory as a tool for peculiar identity / Identity as a device for eccentric inclusion

Using memory as a tool to celebrate home, community and place within the confines of tradition and convention, Days of Our Lives seeks to situate each viewer within the cosmos that emerges through the combination of these three artists’ distinct narratives.  With each artist rationalizing, rectifying and remembering home as a present and tangible monster, the installation propels viewers into a collective vision that is confrontational yet caring; as meditative as it is frightening.

Each artist addresses our conflicted need to fit into a community or structure that is too saturated, routine and tedious or whose paradigm has simply run its course.  By joining together to manifest their own sanctuary at Weekend, a new collective existence is gained through obsessive acts, irony, humor and unique reflection:

Sophia Allison collects, cuts and reconstructs materials to form abstracted physical and emotional landscapes. Her sculpture has been exhibited in Los Angeles at d.e.n. contemporary art, the Craft and Folk Art Museum, the Los Angeles International Airport and most recently in North Carolina at Brevard College.

Paul W. Evans investigates landscape and the subconscious through repetitive appropriation.  His paintings have been seen in Los Angeles at the Institute of Cultural Inquiry, the Center for the Arts/Eagle Rock and he has exhibited widely in New York. He has curated numerous exhibitions in the Los Angeles area and received his BFA from the School of Visual Arts, NY. 

Kim Tucker creates communal identity through individual psychological storytelling.  Recent shows of her sculpture and drawing include exhibitions at L2Kontemporary, ShoeboxLA and AC Projects.  She has attended artist residencies in Europe and the United States and received her MFA from the Ohio State University.

ShoeboxLA Kickstarter Campaign

This past June ShoeboxLA completed its first exhibition season.  As we are a pop-up, mobile space, and our openings/exhibitions are only 3 hours long, we'd like to create a catalogue to highlight all the great work that artists have created for our small gallery this past year.  We need your help--we are asking for funds to be used for the creation and printing of a modest-sized catalogue.  The catalogue will be printed locally (in Los Angeles), and we hope to create 500 copies. It will serve as an important piece of documentation for ShoeboxLA; we'll allocate 2-3 pages for each artist to include images of their exhibitions with us during the past year. ShoeboxLA concludes its inaugural season with Los Angeles artist Karen Frimkess Wolff.  Wolff’s presentation, Dancing on Eggshells, traverses gracefully and joyfully through precarious times and fragile circumstances, while stepping triumphantly onto beds of roses and ultimately into safety.  Wolff, a Los Angeles native, has been exhibiting her sculpture, drawings and installations for over 40 years.  She received her BA in Painting and Drawing from UCLA and her MA in Art History from Cal State Northridge. 

ShoeboxLA is pleased to be returning to the Little Tokyo Galleria, the location for our first show in September of 2011. 

ShoeboxLA gives Los Angeles artists an opportunity to do one-day, site-specific exhibitions outside the traditional gallery setting. Founders Sophia Allison and Paul W. Evans provide an intimate space that challenges artists' and viewers' expectations of size and scale. Locations change for each show but the space remains the same.

Timothy Nolan: Drift

ShoeboxLA is pleased to present Timothy Nolan’s Drift. For nearly two decades Nolan has explored illusions of three-dimensional space through the use of pattern, line and shape in two dimensional wall work and floor installations. While Minimalism and Cubism have influenced Nolan’s work, he also draws inspiration from lesser-known movements such as Pattern and Decoration and Op Art, addressing shifting perception of two and three dimensions; plastic space vs. real dimensionality. For his ShoeboxLA project, he will further this investigation in a work that falls somewhere between object, installation and drawing.

Timothy Nolan received his M.F.A. from CUNY’s Queens College, Flushing, NY and has exhibited widely in Los Angeles and across the United States and Europe.  He was awarded CCI and Durfee Foundation ARC Grants in 2012 and 2010, the COLA Fellowship Grant from the City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs in 2008, and a grant from the Pollock-Krasner Foundation in 2001. A concurrent show entitled Restack, at CB1 Gallery in Los Angeles, will run from April 1- 29^th.

Swerve:  Professional wrestling terminology that describes an unexpected action or event that takes the audience by surprise.

ShoeboxLA is pleased to present its first group show, Swerve, curated by gallery co-founder Sophia Allison.  Artists Amparo Jelsma, Melissa Manfull, Julio Panisello, Carl Smith, and Jaime Ursic primarily work in the two-dimensional realm (painting, drawing, printmaking); for this exhibition, however, each artist was asked to create a work of sculpture. Beyond size restrictions, no other instructions or requirements were provided. While it is not unusual for artists to work in both painting and sculpture simultaneously, it can be a challenge to move fluidly between these mediums. The resulting work may or may not be a translation of the artists’ primary practice but it will be exciting to view the results.  Join us for this special event.
